Three Steps to a Healthier Heating and Cooling System

1. Preventative Maintenance

The motor of an air conditioning unit is often compared to that of a vehicle. Running your unit for a year is comparable to driving your car 60,000 miles. Would you have your vehicle serviced before the 60,000-mile mark? Of course, you would! If you will service your vehicle, why not have your AC unit serviced? We expect our heating and cooling systems to run 365 days a year, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, but we often do not take the time to ensure that our systems are properly maintained. Scheduling a routine cleaning/servicing (bi-yearly or yearly) will help make certain that your unit is prepared to run at its full capacity year-round.

2. Energy Savings

On hotter days when you are away from your home, adjusting your thermostat to a higher temperature will help "lighten the load" of your unit. The same method applies to colder days with cooler home temperatures. Energy savings will help prolong the life of your heating and cooling systems by preventing them from working too hard under extreme conditions. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can even schedule these changes ahead of time!

3. Clean Filters

Did you know that just .042 inches of dust on air filters can result in decreased system efficiency by up to 21%? Cleaning air filters is a portion of preventative maintenance that is often overlooked. If your filters are disposable, dispose of them every three months. If your air filters are reusable, make sure to clean them every two months. This simple task can literally save hundreds of dollars in repairs and utility bills.

Take Necessary Steps

Taking care of your heating and cooling system is not a full-time job, however, it requires diligence and dedication. Set reminders on your phone or on your calendar for scheduled preventative maintenance. If you don't have a programmable thermostat, consider purchasing one. Take measurable steps to help extend the life of your unit and create a healthier home heating and cooling system.
